From Hmong refugees and transnational Korean adoptees to Japanese American internment camps and Googie architecture in California, archives have become a central focus for scholars examining Asian America and its people, things, and places, especially in light of the “absences” of relevant archival materials.
This talk, Archives of Asian Diasporic Architecture, introduces recent collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing these archival absences in the study of Asian American and diasporic architecture, and explores the challenges involved.
Additionally, it highlights the restorative potential of archives in global architectural history—not merely as physical repositories of documents and artifacts, but as practices of knowledge production, community empowerment, and critical pedagogy.
Sujin Eom is an Assistant Professor of Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages at Dartmouth College and co-chair of the Asian American and Diasporic History Affiliate Group at the Society of Architectural Historians.
