3/6 @ 7pm Reflections on South Asian Food and History with Professor Aparna Kapadia and WAAAAN

Join Aparna Kapadia (Ph. D., SOAS, University of London, 2010), Williams College Associate Professor of History and Chair of the Program in Asian Studies, as she explores the complex transcontinental history of three dishes—samosas, vindaloo, and chicken tikka masala—that are considered quintessentially Indian. Tracing their origins, Professor Kapadia shows how they were created through exchanges between cultures over time. Weaving together a rich array of historical texts and images, the talk will illuminate how South Asia was influenced by the forces of trade, conquest, and colonialism. Delving into South Asian cuisine’s interconnected histories, she argues, is a window into much larger processes in the subcontinent’s past.
